Prof. Dr. Franz X. Kärtner, Group Leader at CFEL; PI at MIT

Franz Kärtner received his Diploma and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Technische Universität München, Germany, in 1986, and 1989, respectively. In 1991, he was awarded a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to carry out research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). From 1993 to 1997, he was a principal investigator at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, earning his Habilitation degree in Experimental Physics. After a visiting professorship at MIT in 1998, he joined Universität Karlsruhe (TH) as Professor of Electrical Engineering and held the Chair for Photonics and Terahertz Technology. In 2001, he returned to MIT, where he was a full professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science till end of 2010 and continues to hold an Adjunct Appointment.

Patrick T. Callahan, Research Assistant

Patrick Callahan received the B.A. degree in physics from Cornell University in 2008, and the M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2010. He joined the EO/IR Systems and Technologies Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD, as a member of the professional staff in 2008, where he worked on stimulated Brillouin scattering lasers and microwave-photonic systems until 2011. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Current research interests include low-phase-noise photonic oscillators, photonic analog-to-digital converters, timing-distribution systems and microwave photonics.

Dorothy A. Fleischer, Administrative Assistant

Dorothy has worked at MIT since 1985 and has assisted Professor Franz Kärtner's group in the Research Laboratory of Electronics since 2003. Previously, she worked in the RLE director's office for 16 years and spent two years at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology. Her background is in science writing and editing, and she enjoys working with group members to prepare their journal manuscripts and thesis papers for publication.

Dr. Kyung-Han Hong, Principal Research Scientist

Kyung-Han Hong received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph. D. degrees in physics from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea, in 1996, 1998, and 2003, respectively. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Center for Ultrafast Optical Sciences, University of Michigan, in 2003 and 2004, under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Mourou. Dr. Hong returned to Korea and joined Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) as Senior Research Scientist to participate in a petawatt laser project, which is Korea’s biggest laser project ever. After two and half years of exciting time at APRI, he joined Prof. Franz Kärtner’s group at MIT as Research Scientist in 2007 and then was promoted to Principal Research Scientist in 2012. Before joining MIT, Dr. Hong’s research career was devoted to the development and characterization of state-of-art femtosecond high-power lasers and their application to high-harmonic generation (HHG), soft X-ray lasers, laser-wakefield electron acceleration, proton acceleration, and so on. At MIT, he is working on the development of HHG-based high-flux coherent attosecond XUV sources, optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifiers (OPCPAs) as a HHG driver, and ultrafast high-power cryogenic Yb-doped lasers as a pump source.

Phillip "Donnie" Keathley, Research Scientist

Phillip ("Donnie") Keathley received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Kentucky in 2009, and his PhD in Electrical Engineering and  Computer Science from MIT in 2015. His research focusses on the measurement and characterization of attosecond pulses, along with the study of ionization dynamics in gases, and ultrafast electron emission from nanostructures. He currently leads projects that focus on creating optoelectronic devices that utilize strong-field photoemission and optical tunneling from nanostructures to probe attosecond dynamics with nanometer spatial resolution.

Yizhou Liu, Visiting Student

Yizhou received his bachelor degree from the Electronic Science and Technology department in China University of Mining and Technology in 2012. He received his master degree from the Optoelectronics department in Peking University in 2015. At CFEL, he is currently working on high-power Yb-fiber lasers.

Praful Vasireddy

Praful Vasireddy is a current B.Sc. student at the California Institute of Technology, and he will be graduating in the spring of 2019 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He began working with the Kaertner group in the summer of 2017. Praful plans to attend graduate school after graduating from Caltech, and his current interests include designing medical imaging technology, neuroengineering, and interfacing software with hardware.

Ahmed Kermal, Research Assistant

Kemal Ahmed (Safak) received his B.Sc. in Physics from Middle East Technical University, Turkey, in 2009, and his M. Sc. in Photonics with high honours from Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany, in 2012. From 2010 until 2012, he worked as a research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, Jena, on mode and beam shaping micro-optics for laser resonators. His Master Thesis work investigated thermal influences on the electro-optical characteristics of broad-semiconductor lasers. His current research interests include sub-femtosecond precision-timing distribution and synchronization.

Christine Berber, Adminstrative Assistant

Christine has worked at DESY since 2006, first as assistant for the PETRA III project and later as assistant in DESY's Photon Science Division. She joined Professor Kärtner's new group at the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science in September 2011. Before coming to DESY, she mainly worked in the fields of international trade and traffic consulting. She graduated from Saarbrücken University with a degree in English and Russian for translating purposes and later acquired a certificate as foreigen trade specialist by the Chamber of Commerce. Presently, she enjoys working with Professor Kärtner and group members from all over the world, providing support and ensuring that administrative issues are running smoothly.

Dr. Arya Fallahi, Research Scientist

Arya Fallahi received his Ph.D. degree from ETH Zurich, Switzerland in 2010. Afterwards, he continued as a postdoc at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) (2010-2012). His research interests include general electromagnetic theory, computational optics and beam dynamics. Currently, he is doing research on THz accelerators and compressors for the development of novel compact X-ray sources.

Dr. Oliver D. Mücke, Research Scientist

Oliver D. Mücke received his diploma and PhD in physics from University of Karlsruhe (TH) in 1999 and 2003, respectively. He was a postdoc at M.I.T. (2003-2007) and Vienna University of Technology (2007-2011). His current research interests at CFEL are optical frequency-comb technology and the development of novel parametric pulse sources for attosecond science and extreme nonlinear optics.

Dr. Damian N. Schimpf, Research Scientist

Damian N. Schimpf obtained his Diploma and Ph.D. degree in physics from the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany, in 2005 and 2010, respectively. In 2005, he worked at Imperial College, London, U.K., on the application of ultra-fast fiber lasers to biomedical imaging. His Ph.D. was focused on development of ultra-fast high-power fiber lasers. He was a postdoc at Boston University (2010-2011). His current research interests include cavity design for X-ray generation.

Matthias Schust, Engineer

Matthias Schust completed vocational training as industrial mechanic at DESY in Hamburg. Afterwards he was involved in setting up the MiNaXS-beamline at PETRA III. From 2009 to 2012 he studied mechanical engineering and received his B. Eng. from Technische Hochschule Wildau [FH], Germany. His Bachelor´s thesis dealt with a finite element analysis of flexure tilt tables, which are used at PETRA III. During his studies he worked as student assistant at DESY site in Zeuthen.

Dr. Luis E. Zapata

Luis E. Zapata received his Bachelor in Physics at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1975 and his Master and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1979 and 1981 respectively. He spent 17 years at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he contributed to developing the fusion amplifiers for the National Ignition Facility. While at LLNL he was a prime contributor in the construction of an injection seeded phase conjugated regenerative slab amplifier of remarkable performance (3 GW diffraction limited pulses at 6 Hz) that has spawned a new industry; laser peening –for strengthening turbine blades. Several of his patents have found industrial applications and he received a Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer in 1997. He joined MIT-Lincoln Laboratory in 2009 where he worked in developing ultrafast cryogenic lasers of high average power joining Professor Kärtner at MIT-RLE in September of 2011 where he now champions in the development of ultrafast high average power laser drivers for high harmonic generation, attosecond science and particle acceleration.

Dr. Siddharth Bhardwaj

Siddharth Bhardwaj received his Ph.D. in 2014 from MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  He received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, with minor in Physics, from University of Southern California in 2007 and his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 2010. His research focuses on the theory and modeling of laser-atom dynamics in high harmonics generation. He was a visiting student at CFEL-DESY from July 2011 - April 2012.

 

Sergio Carbajo

Sergio received his diploma in Telecommunications Engineering from Tecnun (Universidad de Navarra), Spain in 2009 and his M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University, USA in 2012 at the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Science and Technology. His current research interests are focused on the development of high-energy few-cycle laser sources for the generation of X-ray lasers.

 

Dr. Guoqing "Noah" Chang, Research Scientist

Guoqing "Noah"Chang graduated with a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science at the University of Michigan in 2006. His dissertation, "nonlinear propagation and high power terahertz generation using ultrashort pulses", has been awarded the Horace H. Rackham Distinguished Dissertation Award of 2006. After staying at the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research fellow at Professor Almantas Galvanauskas’ group for about one year, he joined Professor Franz Kӓrtner’s research group as a postdoctoral research associate in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. On August 1, 2012, Noah joined CFEL’s Ultrafast Optics and X-rays Division of DESY in Hamburg, Germany, as a Research Group Leader. He will set up and lead the “Ultrafast Fiber Optics” group, which is a Helmholtz Young Investigators Group jointly funded by Helmholtz Association, DESY, and University of Hamburg. This research group will continue pushing the limits of ultrafast fiber laser technologies and apply them to laboratory-based EUV/X-ray sources, laser electron acceleration, mid-IR frequency combs for spectroscopy, cavity enhanced ultrafast nonlinear optics.

Dr. Hung-Wen Chen

Hung-Wen Chen received his Ph.D. in 2014 from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. He received his B.Sc. degree in physics, and M.Sc. degree in optoelectronics from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, in 2004 and 2006 respectively.  His research is focused on the development of high-power fiber laser systems, high repetition-rate (>3GHz) Yb fiber laser, and high-repetition-rate frequency combs, including applications such as the astro-comb.

Dr. Vasileios-Marios Gkortsas

Vasileios-Marios Gkortsas received his PhD in 2014 from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT. He received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 2006 and his M.Sc. in Applied Physics from Harvard University in Cambridge, USA, in 2008. His research area is Modeling of High Harmonic Generation.  He was a visiting student at CFEL-DESY from July-December 2011.

 

Wenqian "Ronny" Huang, Research Assistant

Wenqian "Ronny" Huang received a B.Sc. in applied physics from Cornell University in 2009. He joined the Optical Systems Technology Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 2009, where he worked on sensor modeling for Ballistic Missile Defense applications. In 2011, he transferred to the Laser Technology and Applications Group, where he worked on coherent beam combining of lasers until 2012. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at MIT. Current research interests include terahertz generation, electron acceleration, and high power ultrafast lasers.

Dr. Chien-Jen Lai

Chien-Jen Lai received his PhD from MIT in 2014, his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and physics, and M.Sc. degree in optoelectronics from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, in 2004 and 2006 respectively. His research is focused on theory and experiments of high harmonic generation and attosecond science.

 

Dr. Bin Li, Research Scientist

Bin Li received his PhD degree from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA in 2006. He was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Colorado , USA (2007-2008) and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (Science Technology Facilities Council), UK (2008-2010) respectively. From 2010 to 2012, he worked at European X-ray Free Electron Laser GmbH as the Scientist for X-ray Photon Temporal Diagnostics. His research interests include ultrafast & high-power laser technology, Electron/Optics/X-ray Spectroscopy, Free Electron Laser Technique and diagnostics. His current research projects at CFEL are the development of the atto-second science apparatus and investigation of the ultrafast electron spectroscopy and dynamics.

Dr. Duo Li, Research Affiliate

Duo Li received his PhD from the EECS department at MIT in 2014. His research interests include femtosecond lasers and their noise properties. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Optoelectrical Information Engineering from Zhejiang University (2005) in Hangzhou China, and a M.Sc. degree in Optical Engineering from Tsinghua University (2008) in Beijing China.

Dr. Jinkang Lim, Postdoctoral Associate

Jinkang Lim received his Ph.D in Physics (2011) from Kansas State University. His Ph.D research includes ultrashort lasers, non-linear optics, and optical frequency comb. He joined Professor Kaertner's group in March Mar 2011 and works on high repetition rate Yb-fiber laser frequency combs and its application (e.g. astro-comb). His research interests now cover noise characterization of optical systems, compact low noise laser oscillators, high power fiber amplifiers, laser spectroscopy, high repetition rate frequency combs, and their applications.

Dr. Hua Lin

Hua Lin received his PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2012. His PhD research focused on compact, high power all solid state picosecond oscillator and amplifier. At MIT, he worked as a postdoctoral associate on high energy and power cryogenic thin-disk Yb:YAG laser and its applications.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Moses, Research Scientist

Jeffrey Moses received degrees in Applied Physics from Yale University (BS, 2001) and Cornell University (MS, 2004; PhD, 2007). He first joined MIT as a postdoctoral associate, and has served as a research scientist since summer of 2009. He is a contract principal investigator with the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and was named a recipient of the Air Force Young Investigator Award in 2013. His interests include ultrashort pulse generation, molecular and few-body quantum physics, nonlinear waves, and the application of femtosecond and attosecond light sources to the study of light-matter interactions.

Krishna Murari, Research Assistant

Krishna Murari received his 5 Year Integrated M.Sc degree in Photonics from Cochin University of Science & Technology, Kerala, India in 2011. He did his Master's project on home built mini-optical tweezers at Carnegie Mellon University, United States. Before joining Prof. Franz Kaertner's group at DESY, he worked as Research Assistant at the Indian Insitute of Technology, Bombay, collaboratively with Applid Materials Inc. on thin film solar cells. He is now working on the development of regenerative amplifiers and broadband frequency synthesizers for attosecond photonics.

Liang Jie Wong, Postdoctoral Fellow

Liang Jie Wong received his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (highest honors) from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2011. His research interests include high-field electrodynamic theory, plasmonics and noise theory. He is pursuing a PhD degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT under the National Science Scholarship (awarded by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Singapore).

Dr. Guillaume Laurent, Research Scientist

Guillaume M. Laurent received his Bachelor's degree in Physics and Chemistry from the University of Bordeaux (France) in 1999, his M.Sc. degree in Medical Physics from the University of Toulouse (France) in 2000, and his Ph.D. in Atomic and Molecular Physics from the University of Caen (France) in 2004. He joined Prof. Franz Kärtner’s group at MIT as a Research Scientist in 2013. Before joining MIT, Dr. Laurent’s research career was devoted to the study of ion/molecule and molecule/surface collisions, and laser/matter interaction. At MIT, his research interests include attosecond control of electron emission from atoms and molecules, femtosecond control of molecular fragmentation, and attosecond pulse generation and characterization.
